Open Europa Library Talk #1: Maximising Productivity & Quick Onboarding with DDEV

Last Tuesday, on 11 June, we hosted an OpenEuropa Library Talk dedicated to “Maximising Productivity & Quick Onboarding with DDEV”, presented by Claudiu Cristea. The session explored how DDEV can help simplify development workflows and support faster onboarding for developers working across Linux, macOS and Windows environments.

Claudiu Cristea, Drupal Tech Lead and Consultant, brings more than 20 years of experience in web development and has contributed to a wide range of Drupal projects, including several initiatives within the European Commission. His expertise covers technical coordination, backend development and Drupal module development.

During the session, Claudiu presented the main advantages of using DDEV as a local development tool. By offering a consistent and container-based environment, DDEV helps reduce configuration challenges and allows development teams to focus more on implementation and collaboration. Its compatibility across operating systems also makes it particularly useful for teams working in diverse technical environments.

Participants also had the opportunity to follow a live demonstration covering the creation, configuration and management of a DDEV project for a Drupal website. The presentation showed how DDEV commands and plugins can support day-to-day development activities and simplify project setup and maintenance. The session also included a practical demonstration on developing a Drupal module using DDEV, highlighting ways to streamline workflows and improve productivity.

The discussion also addressed some of the current limitations of the tool, including support for custom web containers and the Percona database. Claudiu shared insights into future improvements currently planned by the DDEV team, aimed at further expanding the tool’s capabilities.
