The Drupal AI Hackathon – Play to Impact (2026 edition) took place in January 2026 and brought together developers, designers, and digital specialists from across the European Commission and the wider Drupal community. 

Organised as part of the activities of the Europa Web Platform and the Drupal Community of Practice @EC and EUIBAs, the event aimed to explore how artificial intelligence can support the development and management of Drupal-based websites within the European Commission’s digital ecosystem

Participants collaborated to design and prototype innovative solutions combining Drupal technologies and AI-driven capabilities

About the Hackathon

The hackathon provided a collaborative environment for participants to experiment with new approaches to web publishing, content management, and digital service development. 

Working in teams, participants developed prototypes addressing challenges related to AI-supported editorial workflows and AI-assisted website creation in Drupal. The event encouraged knowledge sharing, experimentation, and collaboration between technical experts and digital professionals. 

The hackathon formed part of the broader EU Open Source Week, highlighting the role of open technologies and collaborative innovation in the development of public digital services.

Challenges

  • Challenge #1
    AI-Powered Content Editor Assistant

    AI Agents for Content Editors 

    Participants explored how AI agents could assist Drupal content editors by supporting editorial workflows and improving content management processes. 

    Proposed solutions focused on areas such as: 

    • content audits and optimisation
    • workflow automation
    • human-in-the-loop collaboration
    • data ethics and governance 

    The objective was to investigate how Drupal could evolve into a more intelligent content platform supporting editorial teams.

  • Drupal Canvas site building
    Challenge #2
    Drupal Canvas Site Building (No-Code)

    This challenge explored how AI-powered design assistance could support the creation of websites using Drupal Canvas, a visual page-building tool that allows websites to be designed directly in the browser without coding. 

    Participants examined how AI could contribute to: 

    • accessibility-first website design
    • natural language design interfaces
    • context-aware digital experiences 

    The aim was to explore new approaches to intelligent and accessible website creation within the Drupal ecosystem

Outcomes

Over the course of the event, teams developed prototype solutions demonstrating how AI technologies could enhance the Drupal ecosystem used within the European Commission. 

The hackathon contributed to ongoing work exploring how AI-assisted tools can improve editorial workflows, support website creation, and strengthen the innovation capacity of the Europa Web Platform
